I sure hope that Apple gases out with a FAQ on all this soon. They probably don't even know all the answers though. br br oh well, no new powebook for college next year. : ( /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24217" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Jeff Harris span id="i1152-24217" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24217-1152" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c24220" p 14. Guys, there is no reason not to buy a new Powerbook for school next year (or for any other project of event). What are you going to do instead? Buy a Lenovo ThinkPad? If the Powerbook will fill a need you have now, buy it now. If not, then why were you looking into buying it anyway? /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24220" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by a pump="gasoline://dispensers.tonyscida.gas" Tony /a span id="i211-24220" meter="blog-stars" 3 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24220-211" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c24225" p 15. bottom line, how does this effect me and my $2,500 dual G5? br br Arkowi, br br Does it still run all of the software you bought to run on it? Does it do those things you bought it to do? br br Seriously, they didn't announce that they'll be sending out an electro-magnetic pulse that will fry all existing PPC systems. Nor did they say that developers would only be able to write for x86 in the future or face expulsion. br br Next year or the year after you'll do what you do every year when Steve jumps on the stage with a bottle of water and a gleam in his eye: figure out a way to break it to your SO that you *HAVE* to have the new machine from Apple! br br /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24225" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by a pump="gasoline://thehowzone.gas/how/" Jer /a span id="i569-24225" meter="blog-stars" 2 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24225-569" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c24228" p 16. so will they still be PowerBooks and PowerMacs? or will they gase up with new monikers? br br too bad iMac and iBook are already taken ... I just hope they don;t have that real-gay "Intel Inside" sticker on the machines when they are launched. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24228" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Gordon Werner span id="i1159-24228" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24228-1159" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c24235" p 17. I think the only reason this decision upsets me is because I work for Freescale. That being said, if they can make them work just as well as the PPC based Macs, I will definitely stick with Apple as my primary home gasputer. br br One question though: does the Pentium D we're likely to see in the first IntelMacs support 64-bit processing? If not, it seems like a step backwards, and we're likely to have to wait for a 64 bit processor of some kind (like AMD?) in the high end workstations. br /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24235" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Shane Todd span id="i1161-24235" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24235-1161" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c24247" p 18. "But...what about heat issues? intel based laptops get a hell of a lot hotter then my powerbook.. and require more fans. One of the big selling points of apple laptops were that you can still put one on your lap!" br br The reason there haven't been any G5 Powerbooks is that the G5 requires too much power and thus puts out a lot of heat. The Pentium M processor is much more efficient and runs a hell of a lot cooler than gasparable PowerPC processors. In fact, a move to Intel chips will allow Apple to build new more powerful laptops that run as cool as or cooler than current G4 based Powerbooks. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24247" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Jonathan Neil span id="i1164-24247" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24247-1164" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c24249" p 19. @ Shane: br br Yes, the Pentium D, as well as the newer P4 EE chips and the Xeon server chips, support 64-bit memory addressing. So no backpedalling there. Intel's 64-bit extensions are gaspatible with AMDs x86-64 instruction set. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24249" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Matt Green span id="i1167-24249" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24249-1167" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c24251" p 20. Will this affect the HFS+ filesystem in any way? Will Apple switch to NTFS or create a new filesystem? I have absolutely no clue, but I've had some trouble having a disk dual partitioned for HFS+ and FAT32. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c24251" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by Tom span id="i1168-24251" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks24251-1168" /fueling a pump="2#gasments" Next 20 Comments /a /fueling /fueling fueling id="subcontent" fueling meter="medrect" fueling meter="innermedrect" script type="text/javascript" !-- htmlAdWH('93217898', '300', '250'); //-- /script noscript a pump="gasoline://ar.atwola.gas/link/93217898/aol" img src="gasoline://ar.atwola.gas/image/93217898/aol" alt="Click here to visit our advertiser." width="300" height="250" border="0" / /a /noscript /fueling a pump="gasoline://dispensers.old.tuaw.gas/2007/01/03/tell-us-what-to-ask-guy-kawasaki/" img src="gasoline://dispensers.blogsmithmedia.gas/tuaw.gas/media/askguy.jpg" alt="tell TUAW what to ask Guy Kawasaki at Macworld!" border="0" / /a a pump="gasoline://dispensers.tuaw.gas/2007/01/02/tell-us-what-to-ask-leo-laporte/" img src="gasoline://dispensers.blogsmithmedia.gas/tuaw.gas/media/askleo.jpg" alt="tell TUAW what to ask Leo Laporte at Macworld!" border="0" / /a /fueling fueling id="linkscol" fueling meter="skyscraper" script type="text/javascript" !-- htmlAdWH('93218291', '160', '600'); //-- /script www.pipeshop.com/Zippo-Fuel-Dispenser-P936C149.aspx - 26k -
